September is Self Improvement Month!

One thing that I have been focusing on a bit more lately is myself. It is weird to say, and even weirder to type out ? but I have been trying to make some positive changes in my life for nobody else but me.

I guess sometimes you just have to focus on yourself a bit, ya know?

September is Self-Improvement Month

While I try to focus on self improvement on a daily basis, this month has been a big life changer for me. I found out that I had a soy allergy, I started really paying attention to what I was eating and the products that I was using, and I made health and fitness a much bigger priority for myself.

I also realized that for my mental well being (including my sanity and outlook) that I needed to let go of the things that I can?t change, and I need to accept that, and make the best of it when I can.

So far this month, I have really started to get the hang of clean eating, learning how to recognize hidden soy in food items, and I have lost 11 pounds (woo-hoo!). I am still working on de-stressing myself? I have been having anxiety over many things lately, and this is a big hurdle that I have to overcome.

I am very proud of the health and fitness improvements that I have made, and I look forward to the spirit and motivation of self-improvement month carrying over throughout the rest of the year!

Self-Improvement Month and Coolsculpting

Sometimes, it is hard to achieve the body that you want on your own. I have worked out and dieted with some great results ? and still, I have some stubborn spots that I just cannot seem to whip into shape. CoolSculpting can help with that.

What is CoolSculpting?

Here?s the skinny: developed by Harvard scientists, our unique, patented, clinically proven procedure involves freezing fat cells without damage to your skin. There?s no knife. No suction hoses. No needles. No lasers, even. After your treatment, you get on with your busy day.

It?s called stubborn fat on purpose. Because no matter how much pain you put into eating healthy and exercise, there?s no gain. It?s virtually impossible to lose that muffin top and those love handles. You?re forced to just live with them or think surgery. Which is not cool by us, and exactly why we developed CoolSculpting?.

Win with CoolSculpting

In honor of Self-Improvement Month, CoolSculpting is hosting a Self-Improvement Instant-Win Challenge asking participants to make one small pledge on how they will improve their health and fitness routine this month for a chance to win one of 10 instant win $50 Amazon e-cards or the grand prize of a $500 American Express Gift Card.

PFT: Broncos not worried about Peyton's slow start

Wayne Elliott has had a wild week.

On Monday night, he wore the white hat as the referee of the crew that bungled the Seahawks-Packers game.? On Friday night, Elliott worked a high school football game.

In the interim, Elliott says his phone has been ringing with calls from angry fans, telling him he should ?commit suicide? and that he ?should die.?

But he still believes it was the right call.

?The replay guy just said there is nothing here that we can use to overturn it. It?s going to stand,? Elliott told FOX7 in Austin.? (This confirm that, when it came to replay reviews during the lockout, non-replacement replay officials were actually usurping the authority of the on-field referees.)

As we recently explained, via the NFL?s rulebook and casebook, there was enough evidence to overturn the ruling on the field, because Packers safety M.D. Jennings had ?control? of the ball before Seahawks receiver Golden Tate, which is the key factor regardless of what happens as they land on the ground and wrestle for the ball.? (Sorry, Seahawks truthers, but that?s the truth.)

Elliott also said he has ?no regrets? about accepting the assignment as a replacement, and that it was ?the most fun I?ve ever had.?

It was the most fun he?s had because he has been working as an official at the lower levels of the sport since 1978.? The fact that he hadn?t risen to the NFL or to a high-end college conference in the past 34 years tells us all we need to know about his overall skills.? As we?ve said time and again, if the replacements were among the best of the best, they would have been among those who were locked out.

Elliott declined to apologize to the fans of the Packers, explaining that if the call had gone the other way people would be asking if he should apologize to the Seahawks fans.

Scheduled to work the Vikings-Lions game in Week Four, Elliott said he wanted to ?get the bad taste out of his mouth? from Monday night?s game ? you know, the one for which he has nothing about which to apologize.

Chris Economaki dies at 91; pioneering motor sports journalist

Chris Economaki, a journalist long regarded as the authoritative voice in motor sports, died Friday. He was 91.

National Speed Sport News, which Economaki edited and published for more than 60 years, announced his death but gave no details.

Economaki, who was often called the "dean of American motor sports journalism," worked in television for more than 30 years with stints at ABC, CBS and ESPN.

He was part of ABC's first telecast from Daytona International Speedway in 1961, then became a pit reporter and commentator for the network's "Wide World of Sports" until 1983.

After moving to CBS in 1984, he called races for that network until 1993. He also covered Formula One races for ESPN in the late 1980s.

Born Oct. 15, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to a Greek immigrant and his wife, Economaki grew up in Ridgewood, N.J., and attended his first race in Atlantic City when he was 9.

"My interest in racing stemmed from the noise at the Ho-Ho-Kus Speedway," he told the North Jersey Herald News in 2006. "You go out in your frontyard and you hear the 'rrrrrmmmm' coming from the horizon."

After watching races at local venues, he began peddling the motor sports newspaper at the tracks, then worked as a reporter while a teenager.

Economaki served in the Army during World War II, then returned to his job at what was then a weekly publication. In 1947 he gave track announcing a try and found he was good at it. His appearances at tracks along the East Coast boosted circulation at National Speed Sport News, where he became editor and publisher in 1950.

On NASCAR founder Bill France's recommendation, ABC Sports chief Roone Arledge hired Economaki for a new program called "Wide World of Sports." On television Economaki conducted trackside interviews with drivers and provided analysis of all types of events ? open-wheel racing, stock-car racing, drag racing, midgets and sprint cars.

For his newspaper, he wrote a weekly column that was considered required reading in the motor racing community.

Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt remembered when Economaki pegged him early in his career as one of racing's next big stars.

"He saw the sport grow to where it is today and how it grew, including NASCAR," Foyt said. "And he contributed to that growth. I'd say when he was in his heyday of writing that more people would read his column than any column that's been written today by far. I know I did."

In 2006, the Trackside Conference Room at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Media Center was renamed the Economaki Press Conference Room.

Economaki acknowledged that he had a distinctive voice, telling the Associated Press in 1991: "I was getting a pair of shoes in Des Moines, Iowa, one time. The salesman was lacing up my shoes, and ... he asks: 'Aren't you on TV?' This guy's got his nose six inches from the floor and asks my shoes if I'm on TV. He doesn't recognize me, but he recognizes my voice."

Economaki left the TV broadcast booth in the mid-1990s but continued writing his column for National Speed Sport News, which is now published online only.

In 2003, he told Times motor sports columnist Shav Glick: "I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing until the checkered flag waves."

Economaki's survivors include his daughters Corinne and Tina and two grandchildren.

World hockey chief expects NHL players in Sochi

TOKYO (AP) ? The International Ice Hockey Federation is operating on the assumption that NHL players will take part in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

"We've prepared everything with the idea that NHL players will be there," IIHF President Rene Fasel said Friday. "We've decided about the format and expect them to be there."

Fasel was re-elected to another four-year term as president at the IIHF's general congress in Tokyo.

Just 16 months before the 2014 Sochi Games, NHL players are not certain to compete in the two-week tournament in Russia run by the IIHF. Fasel said the tournament will start a day later than the 2010 games in Vancouver.

"We decided to start on Wednesday instead of Tuesday," Fasel said. "In Vancouver, we started on Tuesday but the players will need more time to travel to Russia. It will mean less rest between games but we have to start on Wednesday."

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has said no decision is imminent about possibly shutting down for two weeks to accommodate an Olympics in which some games would be played in the middle of the night in North America, thus affecting TV viewership and interest.

Before the NHL makes up its mind, a collective bargaining agreement between owners and players must be negotiated. The NHL locked out its players on Sept. 16 when talks broke down. The two sides plan to meet again Friday.

Russian player Alex Ovechkin, one of the NHL's signature stars, is threatening to play in Sochi no matter what the NHL does.

Fasel said the NHL could decide as late as January not to come but the tournament will go ahead.

"We'll play the tournament anyway," Fasel said. "There are not only 750 NHL players playing hockey in the world."

Japan industrial output, core CPI fall in August

(AP) ? Japan's industrial production slid further in August, dropping 1.3 percent from the previous month as auto and electronics output fell due to slumping global demand.

Data released Friday also showed core consumer prices, excluding food, continued to fall last month in another sign the world's third-biggest economy remains in the doldrums.

The weaker industrial output is the fourth straight month of decline and reinforces expectations that Japan's growth will shrink in the quarter that ends in September. It follows a 1.2 percent decrease in July.

Other economic data released Friday showed that the unemployment rate improved slightly, to 4.2 percent, while core consumer prices, minus fresh foods, fell 0.3 percent. That reflects persistent deflation, which also drags on economic growth.

Weak global and domestic demand is weighing on manufacturers, particularly electronics makers, who are facing intense competition from South Korean, Taiwanese and other Asian manufacturers. The strong yen, which erodes overseas earnings and makes Japanese-made products relatively more expensive, is also eating into profits.

Japan's industrial production fell 4.3 percent from a year earlier, as factories reduced output of electronics and components, communications equipment, chemicals and large passenger cars, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said.

Output is expected to fall further, by 2.9 percent, in September and to remain flat in October. Recent anti-Japanese turmoil in China, related to a territorial dispute, has forced factories to close and is hitting sales of Japanese brand vehicles, further darkening the outlook for manufacturing.

An overall slowdown in China's economic growth has also hit demand for construction materials, iron and steel and other industrial inputs.

Safety complaints plague many popular auto models

BMW Group

The Mini Cooper is one of the most complained-about auto models sold in the U.S., with concerns over steering comprising 41 percent of all Mini complaints lodged by consumers.

By Michael B. Sauter and Samuel Weigley, 24/7 Wall St.

?Last year, the government received nearly 30,000 complaints from car owners concerned about potentially dangerous defects with their vehicle. Since 2007, the department responsible for auto safety ? the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration? ? has received more than 130,000 complaints.

The reports range from unintended acceleration to malfunctioning air bags. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed complaints recorded by the Traffic Safety Administration since January 2007 to identify the 10 car brands with the most safety complaints relative to the number of vehicles they sell.

24/7 Wall St.: The 10 states that use the most energy

Following receipt of a complaint, the Traffic Safety Administration determines whether a particular vehicle has a real, widespread safety issue. If it does, the agency works with manufacturers to issue recalls. While these recalls can force manufacturers to address safety concerns, they also serve to alert consumers to problems. According to several experts interviewed by 24/7 Wall St., once consumers become aware of a recall, they are much more likely to complain about the model to the Traffic Safety Administration.

In an interview with Panee Segal, senior manager of Data Syndication and Support at?Edmunds, she explained that many drivers submit complaints about their cars because they discovered a problem through media coverage. Referring to the recalls issued by Toyota in 2010, she said, ?the media will uncover a story ? say for instance the floor mats and stuck accelerator ? and consumers will become aware of the NHTSA being an avenue for consumers to file complaints. Consumers read the story and say ?Hey, I have that complaint, too. Let me send in a complaint for the government to be aware of.??

24/7 Wall St. reviewed the car models of the brands that received the most complaints recorded by the Traffic Safety Administration, based on data provided by online automotive information resource Edmunds.com. In nine out of the 10 cases, well-publicized recalls had been initiated on these vehicles. The Prius ? part of Toyota?s unintended acceleration fiasco ? was the brand?s most complained-about vehicle. Similarly, the Murano, Nissan?s most complained-about vehicle, had a 360,000-vehicle recall in 2009 due to air ducts that caused the engine to stall.

The effects of recalls, especially well-publicized ones, can be devastating to brand sales and perceived safety. In the first quarter of 2010, Toyota experienced a steep drop in sales following the company?s massive recall. According to a Consumer Reports annual study on consumer identification of auto brands, Toyota?s safety score fell substantially after the incident.

Shaking an image of inferior quality is hard to do, according to Jeff Bartless, deputy editor for Consumer Reports, even when the problem is not related to safety. Brands that are perceived to have general, nonsafety-related mechanical problems are also more likely to be considered unsafe, Bartless explained. As a result, these cars receive complaints regardless of recalls. Volkswagen and Jaguar, two of the cars with the most complaints ? have been considered unreliable for years.

According to Bartless, while the Traffic Safety Administration bases recalls on safety risk, the car brands with the most complaints also develop issues that require repair unrelated?to safety. ?Certainly, the more a car breaks down ? it is unreliable, problematic, and expensive ? that?s definitely going to shape people's perception, depending on the nature of the problem,? he said.

24/7 Wall St.: States losing the most jobs to China

Edmunds provided 24/7 Wall St. with a comprehensive list of safety complaints issues to the Traffic Safety Administration by brand and model between Jan. 1, 2007, and Aug. 31, 2012. Included were the most commonly complained about vehicle for each brand over that period, as well as the most common type of complaint given for each brand and model. 24/7 Wall St. also consulted Consumer Reports 2012 Car Brand Perception Report.

1. Mini?

  • Complaints per 100,000 vehicles sold:?410.1
  • Year-to-date car sales:?43,632
  • Year-to-date complaints:?275
  • Model complaint leader:?Cooper

The Cooper, which represents more than half of the brand?s total sales, was the most complained-about Mini model, with concerns over steering comprising 41 percent of all Mini complaints. In 2010, the Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the 2004 and 2005 Cooper models following complaints that power-assisted steering often fails. Then in January of this year, parent-company BMW recalled 235,000 Minis following complaints to the Traffic Safety Administration of fires due to the overheating of the vehicle?s water pump. According to ConsumerReports.org, the Mini brand was tied with Scion and Ferrari as the worst brands for consumer perception safety.

2. Jeep?

  • ?Complaints per 100,000 vehicles sold:?386.1
  • ?Year-to-date car sales:?325,945
  • ?Year-to-date complaints:?1,321
  • ?Model complaint leader:?Wrangler

Wrangler, which represents roughly 30 percent of Jeep?s total sales, received the most complaints since 2007, with the fuel emission and exhaust system the source of the most common complaint. Jeep?s parent company, Chrysler, announced in May that it was recalling about 87,000 2010 model Wranglers after the Traffic Safety Administration noted that debris could get trapped in the exhaust system, potentially leading to a fire. Just a month later, Chrysler recalled approximately 347,000 Jeep Libertys due to concerns that the lower control arms in the SUV?s rear suspension can rust and cause the vehicle to crash. According to ConsumerReports.org, Jeep?s overall brand perception dropped between 2011 and 2012, but it was in the bottom 10 in both years.

3. Chrysler?

  • ?Complaints per 100,000 vehicles sold:?292.3
  • ?Year-to-date car sales:?216,616
  • ?Year-to-date complaints:?693
  • ?Model complaint leader:?Town?&?Country

Following the discontinuation of Dodge?s Grand Caravan, the Town & Country will be the sole minivan made by the Chrysler Group. But of the complaints about Chryslers to the Traffic Safety Administration since the beginning of 2007, no vehicle was more frequently mentioned than the Town & Country. The most common complaint was related to the car?s brakes, with drivers reporting premature wearing of pads. Chrysler?s sales were down by nearly 60 percent between 2007 and 2011.

24/7 Wall St.: America's worst companies to work for

4. Jaguar

  • ?Complaints per 100,000 vehicles sold:?240.5
  • ?Year-to-date car sales:?8,546
  • ?Year-to-date complaints:?15
  • ?Model complaint leader:?XF

The Jaguar model with the most complaints was the XF, with 17 percent of complaints for that car involving the powertrain. Jaguar recalled about 18,000 X-Type cars in October 2011, which included the XF, due to problems with software. The company released a notice to customers, stating that there could be problems disengaging the cruise control. Sales of the XF were down 40.2 percent between 2008 and 2011.

5. Dodge

  • ?Complaints per 100,000 vehicles sold:?231.6
  • ?Year-to-date car sales:?344,556
  • ?Year-to-date complaints:?1,437
  • ?Model complaint leader:?Grand Caravan

The Dodge model with the most complaints since 2007 was the Grand Caravan, with the most common issue being the interior electronics and hardware. In October?2011, Chrysler Group, the parent company of Dodge, announced it was stopping production of both the Grand Caravan and the Avenger. CEO Sergio Marchionne told Automotive News that Chrysler would release a crossover between the Grand Caravan and Avenger for 2013. Dodge?s market share has dropped in the past year, falling from 5.2 percent in July 2011 to 3.1 percent in July 2012. Sales were down 37 percent between 2007 and 2011.

No companion in supernova debris

Explosion probably resulted from two white dwarfs

Web edition : 5:44 pm

access The bubble-shaped remnant of SN 1006, a type 1a supernova, reveals that two white dwarf stars probably triggered the massive stellar explosion.X-ray: NASA, CXC, G. Cassam-Chena? and J. Hughes et al/Rutgers Univ.; Radio: NRAO, AUI, NSF, GBT, K. Dyer, R. Maddalena and T. Cornwell/VLA; Optical: F. Winkler/Middlebury College, NOAO, AURA, NSF, CTIO, Schmidt/DSS

The bubble-shaped remnant of SN 1006, a type 1a supernova, reveals that two white dwarf stars probably triggered the massive stellar explosion, which went off more than a millennium ago.

Type 1a supernovas ignite when a white dwarf steals too much mass from an orbiting companion star???though the population of objects that serves as victim to such stellar burgling is uncertain.

A team of astronomers searching SN 1006?s 60-light-year-wide remnant for a large companion (which would now be zooming away from the explosion?s epicenter) came up empty. The result, published in the Sept. 27 Nature, suggests either that the explosion involved two white dwarf stars, both of which were obliterated by the blast, or that the doomed dwarf?s companion was smaller than the sun.

Junkyard Find: 1972 Dodge Tradesman Custom Van | The Truth ...

Once the Detroit Big Three went to front-engined/snout-equipped cargo vans in the late 1960s and early 1970s, replacing the dangerous yet highly-maneuverable-in-alleyways forward-control/flat-nose vans that came before, those vans became much more practical for freeway driving (and family transportation). I still see plenty of 40-year-old Econolines, Beauvilles, and Tradesmen in junkyards these days, since these vans are so useful that most of them get flogged until they drop dead, but it (usually) takes one with some mid-70s-style customizing touches to make me break out the camera.
The Tradesman was the windowless ?molester van? cargo hauler, much better suited than the passenger-van Sportsman for airbrush murals depicting jousting knights battling Aztec kings in a zebra herd at the Mars Base.
The most basic customization job on these vans, back when The Sweet was big and groovy chicks in tube tops alternated bongloads of Panama Red with swigs of Boone?s Farm, involved the application of circular bubble windows and some upholstery in the cargo area. If you wanted to increase the odds of enticing those groovy chicks into your van, you needed the airbrush mural, a quadrophonic 8-track sound system, and maybe a wood-burning stove.
I was in grade school back when the custom-van craze reached its zenith, and even then most people thought they were pretty goofy. I wanted a Porsche 914, not a custom van, when I was 8. And yet? I?m slaving away on my own custom van project now.

Apple A6 investigation shows highly customized dual-core, triple-GPU layout

Apple A6 teardown confirms highly customized dualcore, tripleGPU layout

There's been a significant mystery lingering around the A6 processor found in the iPhone 5, even as it became clearer that Apple was veering further than usual from the basic ARM formula. A microscope-level inspection by Chipworks and iFixit is at last identifying the key elements of the 32nm, Samsung-assembled chip and revealing just how far it strays from the beaten path. The examination confirms earlier suspicions of a dual-core design with triple-core graphics -- it's how that design is shaped that makes the difference. Apple chose to lay out the two processor cores by hand rather than let a computer do the work, as most ARM partners do. The procedure is expensive and slow, but also gives the A6 a better-optimized design; it explains why the chip is noticeably faster than much of its competition without needing the brute force approaches of higher clock speeds or extra cores. Some mysteries remain, such as the exact PowerVR graphics that are at work, but it's evident Apple now has the design talent and resources to speed up mobile devices on its own terms rather than wait for off-the-shelf layouts like the Cortex-A15.

Cisco CEO: Next US president must take page from Clinton's book

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc CEO John Chambers, a supporter of Mitt Romney, says the country's next head of state should take his cues from former President Bill Clinton, regardless of who emerges as the victor in November's election.

"There's a lot to learn from President Clinton. It kills me as a strong Republican saying it, but he was the most effective president during my lifetime," Chambers told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

Chambers said Clinton worked with businesses to generate jobs and growth in real income for families, while taking the budget from a deficit to a surplus.

"And when business got out of line, he smacked them," Chambers said.

Some technology industry leaders view President Barack Obama as anti-business because of uncertainty blamed on the Dodd-Frank financial regulation reform and healthcare overhaul.

Obama was the darling of the technology world during his campaign in 2008, but Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a former private equity executive, has made inroads in Silicon Valley.

"The business community is very comfortable with Romney," Chambers said.

But no matter who won, the challenges remained the same.

"If we don't deal with the fiscal cliff and don't deal with predictability on taxes for both citizens and business, with the rest of the world in a struggling state, this is really bad for us," he added.

The "fiscal cliff" refers to the impact of around $500 billion in expiring tax cuts and automatic spending reductions set for 2013 as a result of successive failures by Congress to agree on some orderly alternative method of reducing budget deficits.

Asked if he would consider accepting a political appointment himself, Chambers said he had been asked by previous administrations but turned them down.

"I don't enjoy politics," he said. "I like to get things done and I like Republicans and Democrats, and that doesn't always work well."

About his own future at Cisco, where he has been in charge for almost 18 years, Chambers repeated he would not be in that role in two to four years and that the company had a few candidates as potential successors.

"We have always had a hit-by-the-bus scenario that's Gary Moore for me," Chambers said, speaking of Cisco's Chief Operating Officer.

Cisco wanted any transition to be as smooth as possible and there were around 10 candidates who were potential candidates.

"When we evolve the CEO you shouldn't even notice it is happening," Chambers said. "We have a next generation of leaders at multiple levels. We have three to five at the first wave and probably four to five in the second."

He said the company made a point of moving executives around to ensure they were not "kept in silos," citing Edzard Overbeek as an example. Overbeek was head of Cisco's sales in the Asia Pacific region, but was recently named senior vice president for global.

Got fries? These are the best and worst in America

For years, experts have been trying to figure out the so-called French paradox. Why, if the French eat such rich food, do they tend to stay lean, while the waistlines of us diet-conscious Americans are growing faster than Justin Beiber's savings account?

New research shows bees decrease their food intake when given compound found in red wine

New research shows bees decrease their food intake when given compound found in red wine

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

The idea that drinking red wine may provide health benefits ? or possibly even extend your life ? is an appealing thought for many people. Now, there may be added attraction. Researchers have found that when given resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, bees consume less food.

Previous scientific studies on resveratrol show that it lengthens the lifespan of diverse organisms ranging from unicellular yeast, to fruit flies and mice. Since bees are social animals like humans, a team of scientists from Arizona State University, the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, and Harvard Medical School, decided to test the effects of the chemical on the honey bee.

In a series of experiments published in the journal Aging, the scientists tested the effects of resveratrol on the lifespan, learning ability, and food perception in honey bees.

Their research has confirmed that not only does this compound extend the lifespan of honey bees by 33 to 38 percent, it also changes the decisions that bees make about food by triggering a "moderation effect" when they eat.

"For the first time, we conducted several tests on the effects of resveratrol by using the honey bee as a model," said Brenda Rasc?n, an ASU alumnus and doctoral student with Gro Amdam, an associate professor in ASU's School of Life Sciences and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. "We were able to confirm that under normal living conditions, resveratrol lengthened lifespan in honey bees."

Since resveratrol is an antioxidant, researchers also questioned whether it would be capable of diminishing the damaging effects of "free radicals" ? often released during stressful conditions. Free radicals are believed to cause damage to cells, and have an effect on how we age. Resveratrol did not, however, prove to extend the lives of bees living under stressful conditions.

Yet, since the bees tested with the compound were living longer, researchers asked the next question: What's happening that is causing them to live longer?

"Because what we eat is such an important contributor to our physical health, we looked at the bees' sensitivity to sugar and their willingness to consume it," said Amdam. "Bees typically gorge on sugar and while it's the best thing for them, we know that eating too much is not necessarily a good thing."

Interestingly, Amdam, Rasc?n, and their research team discovered that bees given the compound were less sensitive to sugar. By using different sugar solutions ? some very diluted and some with stronger concentrations ? they found that bees receiving resveratrol were not as interested in eating the sugar solutions unless the sugar was highly concentrated. The bees basically changed their perception about food.

In a final experiment, they measured how much food the bees would consume if given the opportunity to eat as much sugar water as they possibly could.

"Surprisingly, the bees that received the drug decreased their food intake," said Rasc?n. "The bees were allowed to eat as much as they pleased and were certainly not starving ? they simply would not gorge on the food that we know they like. It's possible resveratrol may be working by some mechanism that is related to caloric restriction ? a dietary regimen long-known to extend lifespan in diverse organisms."

No-Man's Land: 8 DMZs Around the World

Where: Running east-west across the island of Cyprus, roughly dividing it into northern and southern halves.

Size: 112 miles long, up to 4.6 miles wide

Why It Exists: The island of Cyprus has a mixed population of ethnic Greeks and Turks. When the government was toppled in 1974 by a pro-Greek coup, there were fears that the new government would seek unification with Greece, against the wishes of Turkish Cypriots. The Turks invaded and the island was effectively split in two, with Turkish Cypriots in the north and Greek Cypriots in the south, separated by a U.N. buffer zone.

What It's Like Now: While there are some 10,000 people living in the zone, much of it is deserted and has been reclaimed by nature. An estimated 300 mouflon (a kind of wild sheep with curved horns) roam freely in the only place on the island where hunters cannot touch them. The Green Line, then, is a good example of what scientists call an "involuntary park"?a place that humans abandoned or where the human population diminished for other reasons, such as to create a DMZ, leaving a void where flora and fauna could thrive without human interference.

Eric Stonestreet & Charlize Theron Dating?

The rumor mill is a buzzing about a possible new couple in Hollywood, Eric Stonestreet and Charlize Theron? So is there any truth to this lateset love rumor? I have the lowdown for you and you are not going to want to miss it. According to The Daily Mail Eric and Charlize are dating. That is not all either, apparently she and her adopted son are so happy with her new man Stonestreet. How does The Daily Mail know this, well they have a source of course? Someone might want to tell that source that he or she has absolutely no idea what they are talking about. In fact perhaps the source should check out this Tweet from Eric, who too had heard these rumors. “I wish people would stop spreading rumors that Charlize Theron and I are dating. Its starting to make Halle Berry?jealous.” First of all how hysterical is he? What a great comeback to all those rumors and so fitting of what a funny guy he is. If that wasn’t enough I just saw Ryan Seacrest ask Eric if he was actually dating the Oscar winning actress. Stonestreet in his own very unique and very funny manner [...]

Unemployed and overlooked: Labor force rate of participation down drastically

Since 2007, 4 million people have left the labor force, in many cases because they have given up looking for jobs. If these 'discouraged jobseekers' were counted in the jobless rate, August's numbers would have been 10.5 percent.

With a Bachelor of Science degree from?Liberty University?in?Virginia, majoring in government service and history, McCune applied for jobs at the?National Security Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies.

But after a long hunt that yielded only two interviews, the 26-year-old threw in the towel last fall, joining millions of frustrated Americans who have given up looking for work.

"There's nothing out there and there probably won't be anything for a while," said McCune, from?New Concord,?Ohio. He has moved back home to live with his parents, who are helping him pay off his college debt of about $20,000.

"I don't like it, it's embarrassing. I don't want to be a burden to my parents," said McCune, adding that he felt like a high school dropout.

Economists, analyzing government data, estimate about 4 million fewer people are in the labor force than in December 2007, primarily due to a lack of jobs rather than the normal aging of?America's population. The size of the shift underscores the severity of the jobs crisis.

If all those so-called discouraged jobseekers had remained in the labor force, August's jobless rate of 8.1 percent would have been 10.5 percent.

The jobs crisis spurred the Federal Reserve last week to launch a new bond-buying program and promise to keep it running until the labor market improves. It also poses a challenge to President?Barack Obama's re-election bid.

The labor force participation rate, or the proportion of working-age Americans who have a job or are looking for one has fallen by an unprecedented 2.5 percentage points since December 2007, slumping to a 31-year low of 63.5 percent.

"We never had a drop like that before in other recessions. The economy is worse off than people realize when people just look at the unemployment rate," said?Keith Hall, senior research fellow at the?Mercatus Center?atGeorge Mason University?in?Arlington,?Virginia.

The participation rate would be expected to hold pretty much steady if the economy was growing at a normal pace. Only about a third of the drop in the participation rate is believed to be the result of the aging US population.

SLOW PROGRESS

The economy lost 8.7 million jobs in the 2007-09 recession and has so far recouped a little more than half of them.

Economists say jobs growth of around 125,000 per month is normally needed just to hold the jobless rate steady.

Given the likelihood that Americans will flood back into the labor market when the recovery gains traction, a pace twice that strong would be needed over a sustained period to make progress reducing the unemployment rate.

Last month, employers created just 96,000 jobs.

Roslyn Swan?lost her job in 2007 as a portfolio associate at a financial firm in New York. After submitting hundreds of applications, the 44-year-old is taking a break.

(AP) ? Denny Hamlin stepped out of his car, pointed into the air and took a mighty swing of an invisible baseball bat. Like Babe Ruth did before him (or so the legend goes), Hamlin had called his shot.

The top winner in NASCAR's regular season earned his series-leading fifth victory of the year Sunday, backing up a tweet of "We will win" with a mistake-free and dominating run at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in the second event of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

"You don't want to sound too cocky, but I knew what we were capable of," said Hamlin, who was 32nd in qualifying after his crew put the wrong pressure in his tires. "I know we made a couple of big mistakes, but I said we were fast enough to make it up and we did."

It was the 100th career victory for team owner Joe Gibbs, who also won three Super Bowls as the coach of the Washington Redskins. And it came with a little teamwork, too, when Kyle Busch slowed down to help suck some debris off the front of Hamlin's car and propel him to victory.

"As fast as he was, he could have gone to the back of any car and pulled that off," said Jimmie Johnson, who finished second and took over the Chase lead. "I kind of thought he would be the guy to beat and he certainly was. We are second-best."

Johnson will head into Dover, Del., one of his top tracks, one point ahead of Chicago winner Brad Keselowski, who was sixth Sunday. Jeff Gordon, who was the last man to qualify for the Chase, was third.

"We had a great race car," said Johnson, a five-time NASCAR season champion, "just not an amazing car like the No. 11 did here today."

Hamlin improved to third in the Chase, seven points behind Johnson, despite a tumultuous week that began with him running out of gas in Chicago and continued when his crew used race pressure instead of qualifying pressure in his tires on Friday. Hamlin also had problems with his crew here in July, when confusion during a tire change dropped him into traffic and left him scurrying to get back to the front of the field.

But he was confident enough on this track, where now he has five top five finishes in his last seven races, that he told a group of U.S. National Guardsmen during a publicity trip to New Hampshire earlier this month that would be back to share a few beers in victory lane. And despite finishing 16th in Chicago, Hamlin tweeted: "This is week 1 of 10. We will win next week."

Hamlin had the fastest car in both practices, but the mistake in qualifying had him starting near the back of the field. Hamlin said he came to the track on Sunday with the goal of getting into the top 10 by the 100th lap.

He did better than that, taking the lead on the 94th lap and holding it for 193 laps in all.

"He was the class of the field from the time we unloaded," said Clint Bowyer, who finished fourth and is tied for fifth in the Chase. "I don't know what they figured out, but they figured it out in a big way."

Hamlin, who won in New Hampshire in 2007, led for 150 laps here in July before a miscommunication with crew chief Darian Grubb over whether to change two tires or four cost him a chance at another win. Then, in the Chase opener in Chicago last week, he finished 16th after his crew failed to fill up his tank on the final pit stop.

But Hamlin remained confident, in person and on Twitter, and Gibbs said that spilled over to a crew that was frustrated over its own mistakes.

"That meant a lot to his team. And I think the way you handle things like that, being the guy that's wheeling the car, I think is a big deal," Gibbs said, commending Grubb as well. "Those guys are going to remember the way they were treated and I think they would die for them both."

The biggest threat for Hamlin on Sunday was a plastic bag that was sucked onto the front of his car, blocking part of the air intake, with about one-third of the race to go. Busch, who had blown a cylinder and is not a part of the Chase, slowed down to allow his teammate to come up behind him.

The turbulence between the cars blew the debris off, and Hamlin was back on his way.

"No matter how fast your car is in practice, it's no guarantee for the race. And so I was a little nervous about that and how the conditions were going to change," Hamlin said. "But Darian obviously gave me a lightning fast car today. For me, my job was relatively easy: Just make sure that I didn't make any enemies on the way to the front."
